All the buildings of the Etnean towns and villages were built in lava stone and many of them were destroyed by the volcano itself. Similarly, the fertile fields of volcano stone which for millennia have produced excellent fruits and strong wines have often been rendered sterile by new lava flows. It is therefore a difficult relationship between the mountain and the Etnean man, but its inhabitants still continue to love their majestic volcano profoundly; in fact, it is no coincidence that Catania, despite having ancient maritime traditions, tends to expand northwards, rather than along the coastline.
This short guide, enriched by numerous photos, illustrates several aspects of the Volcano: its genesis and evolution, the pyroclastic products, lava flows, Etna plants and products, excursion possibilities to the craters.
